2012 Internet Trends from Mary Meeker

Today wraps up the All Things Digital D10 Conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. D10 organizers describe the event as “conversations with the most influential figures in media and technology.”

I believe if nonprofits intend to stay relevant into the future, it is important to pay attention to the current and emerging internet trends that will surely impact our work.

Digital investment analyst Mary Meeker, Partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, presented her annual Internet Trends report yesterday at D10. The report has some tech jargon but is still worthwhile. A few highlights from her 2012 report include:

  • iPad adoption is 3x faster than iPhone adoption.
  • Android Phone adoption 4x faster than iPhone.
  • Mobile internet usage will surpass desktop usage in the U.S. within 1-3 years; in India, mobile internet usage has already surpassed desktop internet usage. ["Mobile" devices are small, hand-held computing devices like smartphones and tablets.]
  • Mobile eCommerce is 8% of USA eCommerce. This is relevant to nonprofits because online giving often trends similar to eCommerce.
  • Re-imagination of nearly everything, powered by new devices: pages 30-84 are snapshots of a variety of THEN and NOWs.

I am pleased to share the informative report as a PDF below:

Then, share this with your staff and volunteer leaders, and use it to jump start (or continue!) conversations about integrating your nonprofit with the emerging mobile internet world.

Yes, Michael Rosen. I will certainly help spread the word to keep our children safe by sharing your blog that features: The 10 Tips for Protecting the Children You Love from Sexual Abuse.” As a volunteer at our local Children's Advocacy Center of Hamilton County, I dedicate this reblog to them. They are quiet heroes among us helping keep children safer with prevention programs while supporting child victims. You can send an e-message of hope to a child victim here: 5000angels.com.

Powerful videos inspire support

Digital consumption is enormous. With mobile devices and TVs literally all around us at any given moment, it should not surprise us to learn the average person is exposed to more than 8 hours of screen time per day (source: Council for Research Excellence).

No matter how you feel about video consumption, the fact remains, our donors and potential donors are tuning in like never before. Using social media tools and email, video messages can spread like wild-fire. Online video can be used to turn viewers into advocates for and contributors to your organizations almost instantly.

With more than 100 million views as of this writing, Invisible Children’s Kony 2012 film provided a glimpse at a decades old problem of child soldiering. Despite the controversy around this overnight viral sensation, more than 3.5 million people have pledged their support after watching the film.

I’d like to share two lesser known but powerful examples of how video can be shared to inspire support:

charity: water Birthdays

American Society for Deaf Children: The Jubilee Project’s Love Language

Please note the above video launched a one-month campaign in 2011 that has ended.

The Right Campaign Team Makes The Impossible Possible

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, involves leading the successful completion of AMAZING CHARITY’s $25 million campaign to accomplish the strategic priorities that you played a role in shaping that will change lives. First, you must make your own leadership gift. Then, help recruit a dedicated team of volunteer solicitors willing to do the same. However, it is essential that some of your team members have a proven record of securing major gifts. You will also need an experienced campaign professional to keep you and your team on task. You have 48 hours to accept your assignment. As always, should any member of your team be caught off guard with a sudden gift, we will disavow its unexpected nature and happily celebrate. This message will self-destruct in five minutes.

Sometimes embarking on a campaign may feel like an impossible mission requiring “special” forces.

I just love an action-packed film like Mission Impossible with incredible feats, all accomplished despite many daunting obstacles. An unlikely collection of characters with super human stick-to-it-tiveness, working together towards a common goal will have me rooting for them scene after scene. This winning film formula may also apply in a competitive campaign environment.

A campaign usually has challenges, especially in today’s new economy. However, by adequately preparing your amazing leaders who believe they can and will succeed, the campaign will attract support in spite of any obstacles.

You need amazing leaders. A successful campaign requires a cast of characters who demonstrate vision, courage and down-right determination. Important details will need to be sorted out well before the quiet launch; at the very top of your pre-campaign checklist is assembling this team.

For starters, having a chief executive with 1) a clear vision and 2) the ability to passionately share it will set the stage for your overall campaign success. You want staff and board members alike racing to fulfill this vision.

Equally as important is a dedicated board, respected by the community, that sets the giving bar high. It is not unusual for an organization to strengthen its board in preparation for a campaign.

Selecting your campaign chair (co-chairs) will definitely involve more time than Agent Ethan Hunt takes to select his Mission Impossible teammates. You will need to cultivate someone who will enthusiastically share in the process of creating the campaign goals and objectives. Your campaign readiness process may require a feasibility study, a market testing or a combination of both, which could help narrow your search. You want a strong leader who is highly respected, genuinely passionate about your mission, willing to give a major gift and unafraid to ask others to do the same.

The right campaign leaders will make the seemingly “impossible” possible. That’s why I refer to them as amazing leaders!

Campaign leaders must have an unwavering belief that success is theirs. Live it. Breathe it. Feel it. Share it. And like Ethan Hunt and his Mission Impossible team, never, never, never, never, never give up until you can say: Mission accomplished!

Reblogged from Michael Rosen Says...:

An exciting new study from researchers at Texas Tech University used brain scans to garner fresh insight into charitable giving behavior. Specifically, the study looked at what motivates individuals to make a charitable bequest commitment as well as what de-motivates them. This is the first time that Magnetic Resonance Imaging has been used to examine charitable bequest decision making.

This blog post marks the first time that the breakthrough findings of the Texas Tech study have been released to the nonprofit development community.
